Our lives are as busy as they’ve ever been. People want more from us, our companies demand more from us and life asks so much more from us than ever before.

In fact, it gets so crazy sometimes that we end up missing some incredible things.

What Are You Missing?

Washington DC, Metro Station, on a cold January morning in 2007.

The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately 2 thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:

The violinist received his first dollar. A woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:

A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:

A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.

45 minutes:

The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money, but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

1 hour:

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.

Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100 each.

Joshua Bell playing incognito in the Metro Station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities.

The questions raised: In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made...

Opulence and intimate warmth are combined in this marvelous estate. When we went to take photos of this gorgeous home we got more than we bargained for. Not only was the house out of this world, the grounds were equally so. Could have stayed outside soaking in the beautiful back veranda and infinity pool, but knew that there was work to do. Once inside there was so much wonderment (yes, wonderment is a word), it was difficult to know where to start. We started with the master suite on the second level and worked our way down. More on this later.

How To Prepare For An Ice Storm!

I hear that OKC is in for an ice storm! I really hate cold weather and I especially hate driving when the roads are icy. So I looked up some tips on how to prepare for an ice storm. I found these helpful tips on http://www.ehow.com/how_2063908_prepare-ice-storm.html.
Step 1: Watch the weather. Notice when conditions present themselves for the possibility of an ice storm. Not all ice storms are predictable, but meteorologists can let you know when conditions are favorable.
Step 2: Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishable foods, hand can-opener, a first aid kit, prescription medications, blankets and warm clothes for each member of the family. Make a checklist of things included in the emergency kit. Update the list if you use anything from the kit so you can replace it as soon as possible.
Step 3: Have a charged cell phone ready so you can contact emergency officials. In an ice storm, power may be cut off for several days.
Step 4:Unplug all electrical devices such as televisions, microwaves and computers. If the power goes out, unplug all remaining electrical devices and turn off the main breaker.
Step 5: Get your car ready by filling the tank with gasoline and storing extra blankets in the trunk. Have a first aid kit and an emergency road-side kit in the vehicle also.

My Kitchen

When you live in a smaller home like I do, it's hard to get everything you need into a room without it looking too cluttered. That's my main worry about my house, I don't want things to look cluttered. For example, this weekend I started in the kitchen and took everything off the counters, cleaned everything really well and then decided what I really needed on the counters and what I didn't use very often. Just doing that one simple thing really made a difference! It made me have so much more counter space and also made everything look so much cleaner! Our kitchen has gone through a major transformation. Here are the before and after pictures. The picture below is the kitchen before we even moved in. I think I took this while I was in the house for the inspection. It didn't look bad, but just wasn't my style.

The picture below is kind of during mid-transformation. I had finished painting the cabinets, and walls but the old linoleum flooring was still down and look how cluttered the counters look!

This is my kitchen just taken this morning. We had the old floors taken up and new tile put down. So much better! I completely finished the cabinets and hardware and we put up some backsplash because I thought everything looked too white! I would love to have new counter tops, but they're a little expensive!

Here We Go A Wasailling!

It's so cold outside, so I was thinking of putting a recipe for something warm and tasty! I found this wassail recipe on allrecipes.com. It's a great party drink to serve and also makes your home smell sooooo good!

INGREDIENTS
1 gallon apple cider
6 apples, cored and cut into 1 inch chunks
4 (2 inch) whole cinnamon sticks
1/4 teaspoon ground mace
1/4 teaspoon anise seed
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon ground ginger
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 orange, thinly sliced
1 lemon, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS
Combine the cider, apple chunks, and cinnamon sticks in a large kettle and bring to a boil over medium heat. Turn the heat down to low and add the mace, anise seed, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and brown sugar. Stir to combine, and simmer for 20 minutes until the spices have developed their flavor.

Drop in the orange and lemon slices, simmer for 5 more minutes, and turn off the heat. Ladle the wassail punch into mugs and serve hot. Include a few pieces of cooked apple or a cooked orange or lemon slice in each mug.

I think I'm going to try to avoid Penn Square Mall (not enough parking) and just hit the individual stores like Kohl's and Old Navy. Here are some tips to keep you and your family's home safe during the holidays:

1. Be sure to use indoor lights indoor, and outdoor lights outdoors!

2. When using ladders for decorating always have someone there with you in case there is an accident.

3. Be careful with candles, keep them away from the tree, gifts and any holiday decorations that are highly flammable. Also be sure to trim the wicks so the flame doesn't get too high.

4. Don't overload the tree with too many decorations and lights, it could tip over!

5. Always take care of your fireplace and never leave fires unattended.

6. If it snows, try to keep the walkway clear and put down salt so that no one falls.

7. As far as holiday plants go, holly and mistletoe are great to decorate with, but remember that they are poisonous! Keep them high up and away from pets and children. Poinsetta's are not poisonous, so no worries there.

So now that Thanksgiving is over, we can officially start the Christmas season! I'm the kind of person who doesn't listen to Christmas music on the radio until the day after Thanksgiving, because I think our society has started going from Halloween directly to Christmas and skipping Thanksgiving! I don't like when people put up their Christmas lights before Thanksgiving either, that one really gets me! Anyway, we're in full holiday swing now! Here's my problem, I have a one year old who is getting into everything! How in the world am I going to put up a tree? I love Christmas trees and the lights and putting the gifts underneath. But with a one year old, do I really want to go through the hassle?

Looks like it's a table top tree for me this year!

Another thing you might be wondering is how to have your house ready for showings during the Christmas season. I say to keep it simple, a table top tree may not be a bad idea, it keeps the home looking neat and makes the living room look larger. I also wouldn't overdo it on the outdoor lights, if you put up lights on your home, be sure to stick with a classic look that anyone could appreciate. My advice is to stick to a tight color scheme and avoid icicle lights, they look a little bit messy to me. Last night I went to a friend's house for a dinner party and her home smelled so great! I thought that maybe they had new carpet or something, but when I asked, she said it was a Tyler Candle. I've had one of these candles before and they smell so great! I get headaches easily so I always have to get just the right scent that won't be too strong for me. Leaf Me Alone!

I don't know about you, but fall leaves are really starting to bug me! They're everywhere, especially in my entryway and on the paws of our dogs when they come running in the house! You know what that means, leaves all over the floor inside. I actually have a leaf blower which can also suck the leaves up and is great for leaf removal. I used it the other day and our yard looked great, I thought I was going to get ahead of the leaves this year! That is until the Oklahoma wind decided to come in and blow the rest of the leaves off of the huge tree in our front yard, coating it again! Now it's back to square one!

Leave removal isn't just necessary for for cosmetic reason, especially when selling your home, but it's necessary for the health of the yard. Leaves that stay on the lawn can cause the lawn to turn yellow and may even die back. Matted leaves on the ground even encourage some types of diseases to develop that can adversely effect your lawn's health the following year.

I found a great article on About.com about the best places in Oklahoma City to do your Thanksgiving shopping. Estimated cost is figured by adding non-coupon prices obtained in November 2007 for the following items of comparable brand: 12 pound turkey, 12 dinner rolls, 2 cans green beans, 1 pound sweet potatoes, 1 box stuffing, 1 can cranberry sauce, 5 pound bag potatoes, 1 frozen pumpkin pie. Here's the breakdown:

Wal-Mart - Pros: Odds are there's one very near you. The prices are typically quite competitive and the selection diverse. It's the best option for "one-stop" shopping.

Cons: Plan on it being one of the more crowded options for Thanksgiving shopping as well. The shelves will be stacked, but you may have to fight through the people to get to what you want. Patience is definitely required here.

*Estimated Cost: $22.68
Target - Pros: Targets always seem to be very clean and well-kept. You'll find quality brands and food products including an extensive bakery, produce section and fresh as well as frozen turkeys.

Cons: Although the rest of the store always is quite spacious, the grocery section seems less so. The prices are good on turkeys, but you may not find the name brand ones you prefer.

We went to Pop's last weekend and if you haven't been yet, you HAVE to go! It's a great stop on the historic Route 66. It's just a short drive from Edmond/OKC in the Arcadia area and so close to the Arcadia Round Barn, another Route 66 icon. I have a 10 month old and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the whole house clean at the same time! I get one room finished and by the time I get to the next room, she's destroyed the room I just finished! So, if your house is on the market, and you can have a showing at a moment's notice, how do you get it clean in a hurry? I know that my house is cluttered with "baby stuff." The swing, the bouncy seat, the walker...they're all over the place! Here are a few suggestions to help out with this problem:

1. Try to keep the baby stuff in the baby's room, even if you have to move them several times a day.
2. Have decorative baskets in the family room or other living areas that you can throw the toys into in a pinch.
3. Keep out only what you truly need to have out. Store away the things that aren't used often.
4. Dump the diaper pail before the showing, just a good idea no matter what!
5. Don't forget to clean the bathtub area, I know that right now there are bath toys, washcloths and a big duck bath in my tub.
6. Make sure that when the photographer comes to move the toys completely out of the picture. Put them in the closet or just out of view.
7. If anything folds up to make it smaller, be sure to do that, any extra space in the home helps!

I know it won't be easy to keep things perfect, but hopefully it will be just for a little while! I get to see a lot of beautiful kitchens with my job. I'm the photographer for The Atchley Group and one of my favorite things is taking pictures of the kitchen. They're interesting, cozy, smell nice and they're all different! However, I am seeing some kitchen trends that really catch my eye and stand out above others, it's when you mix things up a bit. I really like when there is a mixture of painted and stained woodwork, great wall colors and even different types of countertops. We worked out of a model home in Cumberland Crossing where the counters were one type of granite and the center island was a different color. I loved it! So, if you're looking for a way to spice up your kitchen, try to mix it up! If you ever decide to sell your home in the future, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in making a decision about buying. Trend #1 - A Kitchen for the Entire Family

More open kitchen designs with adjoining dining and great room or family room spaces.

Under-mounted sinks are very fashionable these days, featuring a smoother, cleaner look that blends especially well in a modern design decor. The bowl is installed underneath the counter top, with no rim showing above. Cleaning the counter top is much easier since there is no lip to collect food crumbs and grime.
Various sink shapes are available these days. Using an asymmetrical, oval or rounded sink can make a very unique look, some with a large main bowl and adjoining smaller bowl for rinsing fruits or vegetables. In many cases, a second sink will be installed for this purpose at the prep station.

Ah, it's finally the time when 7-11 has the pumpkin spice cappuccino! I stopped in today and got one on my way to work, it's like Thanksgiving in a cup! There's nothing I love more than the smell of pumpkin candles also. I use them all year round because they smell so good and they're not overwhelming. Lighting a nice candle or putting out a soft air freshener is a great thing to do when your home is on the market, but sometimes a candle isn't enough. Have a friend come over and honestly tell you if your home has an odor. Sometimes you can't smell it if you live there, it's true! Here are some useful tips* for getting your home smelling great for showings!

1. Take out the trash before showing. That simple.

2. Tell the children to keep stinky shoes in the garage.

3. Sprinkle baking powder on the carpet before vacuuming.

4. Vinegar - your new best friend. Use vinegar to clean floors, countertops, and bathrooms. (1/2 cup to one gallon of hot water.) A stronger vinegar mix dissolves hard-water scum on shower tile and glass enclosures.

5. Add essential oil drops to final rinse for floors.

6. Use essential oils in a diffuser instead of artificial sprays that some home shoppers may find offensive; they may think you're trying to mask a bigger problem like mildew, or even worse, they may be allergic to the artificial product and think your house makes them teary-eyed and sneezy.

7. Keep up with the laundry. Wash sneakers with a half-cup of added vinegar.

8. Wash all bed linens, even blankets, which hold odors. Use non-allergic scented fabric softener.

9. Check window coverings for musty smells.

10. Run a grapefruit or orange skin through your garbage disposal for a refreshing clean smell a few minutes before showing.

Cleaning the Garage

This weekend my husband and I cleaned out our garage. Well, we did the best we could! We still can't actually park cars in there, but after a trip to the dump and a garage sale, it's going to happen!

What a mess garages are, they hold so many things, but usually not cars! I think that garages are one thing that home sellers can forget to take care of when staging and preparing the home for sale. That's where all the junk that was in the house went anyway! However, if a potential buyer steps into a junkpile in the garage, it's a huge turnoff. Get organized, sweep, buy some plastic tubs, hang your rakes, shovels and brooms on the wall. Whatever you do, get the stuff off the floor and be sure that you're able to actually park in there.

As for the garage sale, I've never actually held one, but it's a great way to get rid of the things that you can no longer use or may not need anymore. I looked it up and the city of Edmond does not require you to have a permit to hold a garage sale. Now that the weather is cooler it's so much more comfortable to spend some time in the garage going through things and deciding if there's enough for a sale. The North block of Paseo will be closed Friday evening and all-day Saturday. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.42%. "Mortgage rates followed Treasury bond yields higher this week amid market uncertainty over the current state of the economy," said Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac vice president and chief economist. Tips for Fall Home Maintenance

Continue to mow your lawn until the first frost. Remove the leaves when your grass has stopped growing.

Those falling leaves will eventually clog your gutters and downspouts. Not cleaning your gutters can damage your homes foundation. Schedule gutter cleaning with a professional before winter arrives.

Clean your outdoor furniture, and refinish it if necessary, to prevent rust and damage from freezing. If you store your outdoor furniture inside for the winter (which is recommended, if at all possible) allow for some airflow. Encasing the furniture tightly in plastic could lead to moisture damage.

Schedule any indoor painting you need done. The weather is usually ideal for leaving windows open for ventilation.

Properly discard or store paint, caulk or adhesives in a heated area to prevent them from freezing. Call your local hazardous material removal service for instructions on discarding products that could be toxic. Drain all gasoline containers, including lawn mowers and other gasoline-powered tools.

Check insulation in your attic, basement and other areas for any dirty spots, which often indicate air leaks into or out of your home. If you find any holes, seal them with caulk.

You can save 10 percent or more on your energy bill by reducing air leaks in your home, so take a look around for drafts around doors and windows and seal those you find. One easy way to test for air leaks is to hold a lit stick of incense around windows and doors. Drafts will cause the smoke to drift with the current. Pay special attention to any airflow beneath your doors, as opening and closing often causes door sweeps to wear out.

With dark days ahead, exterior lighting is very important. Check all your bulbs and consider using timers to turn lights on at dusk and off in the morning.

Before you light the first log, get your chimney cleaned and make any necessary repairs. Fireplaces that are used regularly during the season should have an annual cleaning to prevent chimney fires.

If you're like me, you love the colors of fall mums, but can't keep anything alive! I would love to plant some fall flowers but let's be honest, with my luck, they're dead in a week. That's why I think I've decided to buy some potted mums for my front door, to bring in a little color! For some reason I feel like I can keep a potted flower alive for longer and I don't have to get my hands dirty!

I found a great article in the Oklahoman today by Rod Moesel that says, "Hardy mums are stars of the fall garden. Many varieties are bursting into color, and most will stay showy until the first hard freeze in November. You can buy them now, in color, at your local nursery. They are available in hundreds of varieties and a rainbow of colors including yellow, bronze, ruby red, pink, orange, white and lavender."

So I may go out and look for some beautiful fall potted flowers today, those displays at Under the Sun are just too gorgeous!

Since it's officially fall, I got my fall decorating box out yesterday. I realized that I don't have very many fall decorations and buying them can get expensive. I see really gorgeous wreaths at different stores, but they're so expensive that I can't bring myself to buy one! So, here are some tips on how to make your own wreath. This one is for fall, but I think it could go all the way through winter if you stick with the red color scheme. I got this idea from the Better Homes & Gardens website, where there are lots of fun crafting ideas!

Huckleberry Wreath
1. Insert the branches into a round plastic-foam base, or use a bit of glue to hold the pieces more securely in place.
2. Attach winterberries, highbush cranberries, sumac leaves, and dried amaranthus as the finishing touch.

Updating the exterior of your home with the seasons really makes your home stand out, especially if it's on the market, so get out there and "fall into decorating!"

Don’t listen to the national media -- Oklahoma is number one in nation for home value gains! This comes at a time when homeowners in other parts of the country are wondering what happened to their equity, reports Gary Atchley.
“Slow and steady was our pace and it still is. Bottom line, our prices are still on the rise and this may be the best time to buy.”
Our state led the nation in appreciation, first among the 50 states, for the period ending June 30th. With values in a historic general national decline in some of the country, and in a freefall in select states, values in Oklahoma rose 4.9 percent in the second quarter compared with the second quarter of 2007, according to the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight Home Price Index. Nationally, values fell 1.7 percent during the same period. The U.S. purchase-only index tumbled 4.8 percent over the year, the agency reported.
Oklahoma reports 2 strong markets - Oklahoma City and Tulsa. In fact, Tulsa ranked 10th among metro areas, with an increase of 4.87 percent. Specifically, our area in Oklahoma City ranked 17th with an increase of 4.68 percent. Quarter to quarter, Tulsa values increased 0.91 percent and Oklahoma City values increased 1.87 percent, the federal agency reported.
This echoed second-quarter statistics from the National Association of Realtors. Oklahoma City and Tulsa were among 35 metro areas that showed gains in median home prices in the second quarter. Oklahoma City's median price of $131,000 was 1.3 percent higher than the $129,300 recorded in the second quarter of 2007 and 4.8 percent higher than the $124,900 recorded in the first quarter.
Oklahoma is very fortunate. This is the eighth straight year we are seeing steady increases in home appreciation. We have not experienced the sharp increases or decreases in home values that have occurred elsewhere. On the contrary, we have continued to see slight but steady growth during these uncertain times for other markets. This dynamic is fueled by the fact that our market is made up of solid demand from home owners rather than from real estate speculators, adds Gary.
Nationally however, there is a lot of gloom and doom in the news. “Thank God the economy is not as bad as you read in the newspaper everyday,” stated Phil Gramm, top
economic advisor to Sen. John McCain. The US economic situation has been portrayed in the media as being brought about by the rising cost of oil and the “burst bubble” in the housing market. While cost of oil hangs at near record levels, the housing market is really a nationwide problem? You’ve heard of mental depression; this is a mental recession,” said Gramm in July.

I've lived in Oklahoma all my life, growing up in Porter, the peach capital of the state and one of the smallest towns in the state. Now I'm an Edmond girl and get all the perks of a big city with OKC so close by. This weekend we went to see the Lyric Theater's production of "The Sound of Music". It was held at the Civic Center Music Hall and was a fantastic show! Oklahoma City always has lots of events going on and this did not disappoint.

I also love going to concerts and the Ford Center has some great bands that come through. I've seen the Eagles, Green Day, Dixie Chicks, Kenny Chesney, Bon Jovi, Coldplay, and lots of others. It's in a great location near Bricktown, so you can grab a bite to eat in one of the great restaurants and walk over to the concert. There's also a huge movie theater, the river cruise, tons of restaurants and the ballpark.

A big activity coming up in OKC is the Bricktown Independence Day Celebration with live music, many food vendors on hand, and there are games, a children's carnival and more.

Another good thing about Oklahoma City is that we are number one on the list for having the lowest gas prices! I know that's a relief to everyone that lives here. It may not seem low, but compared to other cities, it actually is!

Good news travels fast and bad news gets a lot of press. With the national media continually reporting housing crisis downfall, the Oklahoma City metro residential real estate market area is withstanding the turbulence. A national financial magazine has taken note!
A Forbes May 08 article by Joshua Zumbrun noted the statistics that have garnered our community as a great place to live -- not just for lifestyle but for financial stability too.
The article begins with the recap of how nationally home prices are falling, unemployment is on the rise and the economy is expected to grow slowly. Zumbrun sees a glimmer of hope and announces, “Some cities are doing just fine.”
Based on factors like median home price which improved 8.2%, unemployment at 3.5%, key growth indicators in leisure/hospitality industry up 6% and construction improving 11.5% from 2007, the author recognizes our market as one of the strongest housing markets in the country because of what he cites as our strong “agriculture, energy and manufacturing” base.
Here’s the quote we want to celebrate:
“(Oklahoma City) best positioned of the nation’s metropolitan areas to ride out the current crisis.”
Companies like Devon Energy and Chesapeake Energy have given Oklahoma economy a healthy boost and suggest the energy sector is the right place to be.
And more good news for our region, the author also named San Antonio and Austin in second and third place with Houston at seventh and Dallas/Fort Worth area coming in at tenth.

Effective immediately, 100% conventional mortgages have been eliminated from the mortgage market. This is an industry-wide guideline change. Regardless of credit score, income, or debt ratios, 100% conventional mortgage financing has come to an abrupt end. A 3% minimum down payment will be required by all borrowers. FHA loans with down payment assistance from the seller (if seller is willing) still exist. This type of loan allows the seller to pay the borrower’s down payment of 3%. Seller must be willing to participate in this type of transaction. There are still great mortgage programs for borrowers and rates are still low. However, it is more important than ever for borrowers to have their credit, assets, and down payment in the best shape possible if they expect to qualify for a mortgage, especially if they expect to qualify for the preferred programs with the lowest rates and fees. Make sure you are working with an experienced and reputable Realtor. Also make sure you are working with an individually licensed loan officer. Ask for their individual license number. Don’t except a blanket license for everybody in the office. Get theirs, and match it with the Department of Consumer Credit’s database to make sure that they are current on licensing as well as continuing education.

Despite what Wall Street wants you to believe, owning a home isn't the same kind of investment as stocks or bonds. What you get is a USE asset that depreciates over time, while it grows in market value. All you have to do is keep the home in good repair to max out your take.
Here are five reasons why you get more for your money with a house than a worthless sock puppet.

· Leverage: with stocks, you put in all your money for a little piece of a company. With a house, you put in a little money to get all of the house.
· Tax benefits: Uncle Sam knows that owning a home is a pain in the neck, that's why you get subsidies. These are basically government bribes to get you to buy. What other investment can you put in 5 percent of the cost of the asset, reap all the appreciation and pay no capital gains?

That's right: live in your home two years, rent it for three, sell it, and pay no tax on capital gains up to 250,000 for singles, $500,000 for married couples. And you're worried about paying too much?
And that's not all - think about the benefits of fixed-rate mortgages, property tax write-offs, interest rate deductions, depreciation. Is this a great country or what?

· Control: When you buy stocks, you're paying some CEO 500 times the average worker's salary for results you'd lose your job for. With a home, you have control - what you buy, how much you pay, and where you live. You can improve the value with repairs and updates. Compare that to getting heard at the next shareholders' meeting.
· Lifestyle: Do you want to look at a dumpsite or your children playing in their own back yard? With a home, you're purchasing a vantage point for yourself and your family. The neighborhood you want to be in, the size and style home that fits your needs. And the more wisely you choose, the better off you are.
· Value: Unlike our little sock puppet friend, your house will seldom become worthless. Barring a catastrophe, your home will retain a major portion of its value, even in the worst of times. So don't freak out about a losing a few percent this year. You'll make it up. Housing has lost value only one year out of the last 35. It's more normal to beat inflation by one to two percent.
Let's get a little perspective here. You lost a greater percentage on the stock market this year than if you owned a house. You lost more on your SUV. And you sure lost more on your iPhone.
